Nacido en la órbita del Cinquecento, evolucionó con velocidad hacia el nuevo estilo, el Manierismo, que se introduce con Rafael y Miguel Angel. Bronzino era el apodo con el cual se le conocía en la corte florentina de los Médici, tal vez debido al color oscuro de su piel. Fue el pintor favorito de Cosme de Médici, a quien retrató en innumerables ocasiones, así como al resto de su familia.Su estilo es sumamente frío y elegante, y fascinó a los pintores del realismo mágico alemán e italiano durante la entreguerra del siglo XX. Habiendo sido alumno de Pontormo, uno del manieristas más famosos, no aprendió sin embargo a tratar como él los asuntos religiosos. Demostró falta de sentimiento en sus cuadros de tema bíblico, lo que le condujo a escenas afectadas, lejanas del sentimiento devocional que se supone debían provocar.Pero el estilo de su maestro resultó genial aplicado a los retratos de Bronzino. Cortesano y poeta, los personajes de sus cuadros son figuras de la alta nobleza florentina, como Don García de Médicis; o bien otros poetas y literatos florentinos. Fundó la Accademia del Disegno de Florencia en 1563, en la estela de las academias italianas del momento, siendo maestro y padre adoptivo de otro gran pintor, Alessandro Allori, como él mismo fue adoptado por Pontormo, en un intento de reavivar la tradición senatorial de la Roma republicana de principio de la era cristiana.
